Staff Support Specialists
I was raised as the youngest of six kids in St. Louis, Missouri where I attended Kindergarten-High school within the Pattonville School District. My mother owned and managed a private pre-school/Kindergarten where I worked every summer helping as a teacher’s aide. After graduating high school I attended the University of Missouri (Mizzou) where I was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and received a Bachelor degree in Speech Communications within the school of Arts and Science. After college I worked as an Account Executive for a Fortune 500 company in Ft.Worth, Texas where I lived for three years before moving back to St. Louis and working for MCI Telecommunications as an Account Representative while working toward a master’s degree in Communications at Lindenwood University. I spent the next 10 years as a military wife while raising two daughters Britt and Annie both at Ft.Benning, GA and Ft.Campbell, KY while staying very involved as a volunteer within the Officer’s Wives club.I also ran a successful direct sales business out of my home.
After my husband left the military, our family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in January 2000. I became an active volunteer at Grant Wood Elementary where my daughter’s attended school. My son Jack was born in 2004 and I began substituting as a Para Educator in the fall of 2011when Jack entered Grant Wood as a first grader. I then became a permanent Title I Para Educator in October 2011 for Grant Wood where I currently serve as their Volunteer Coordinator and Title I Para Educator.

School volunteers generous with time and talent. The annual report of the District Volunteer Services Program indicated that 7,158 volunteers contributed 149,157 hours during the 2011-12 school year. The demographic distribution of the volunteer workforce indicates a diverse make up: 39% are parents of students, 50% are non-parents; 4% are senior citizens; and 7% are youth.
“All District volunteers are considered education volunteers,” explained Marcia Hughes, Community Relations Supervisor. “Regardless of their level of participation, their primary goal is to provide support for the educational needs of students.” Students benefit directly from instructional support given by volunteers who provide enrichment, in-class or clerical assistance, mentoring, and ‘at home’ help. Indirect support is contributed by volunteers through parent organizations with special projects that benefit the school as a whole, such as technology and fine arts activities. Volunteer involvement is tracked at each school and through the District’s Community Relations Office.
Calculated at the District’s lowest paraprofessional wage last year of $10.67, the savings to the District is more than $1.5 million. The staff equivalent is 138 paraprofessionals working six hours a day. Education volunteers outnumberedstaff by more than two to one.
